Melbourne is known for its unpredictable weather and a mild oceanic climate. Melbourne is situated on the border of the extremely hot inland and the cold Southern Ocean. The temperature difference is most pronounced during spring and summer, when it can lead to the formation of strong cold fronts. Cold fronts can bring extreme weather, from gales and severe thunderstorms to heavy rain and hail. Melbourne is colder in winter than other state capitals on the mainland. Snowfalls are rare, and the lowest temperature recorded was -2.8 degC. Melbourne is more prone to winter fog and frost. Bring a “Canadian-style” fall jacket and not just a windbreaker.
