The Iowa Games started awarding the Brian Pearson Scholarship in honor of Brian Pearson, a former Iowa State University basketball star who died from brain cancer in 1997.
Pearson understood the value of commitment and hard work. He valued his relationships with family, neighbors, teammates, and friends. People who had the good fortune to have known Brian describe his life with words such as integrity, honesty and politeness.
The Brian Pearson Memorial Scholarship was created to honor three individuals each year: Two outstanding athletes who participated in the Iowa Games, one male and one woman (and Brian Pearson).
